I’m sure you and your kids are excited for Halloween and trick or treating. As parents we want the kids to have fun and be safe when out trick or treating. Here are some tips that will help ensure an enjoyable and safe Halloween night.
Many costumes come with masks, but these are really not safe for little ones. Try to use a costume without a mask. You can have hats or other head covering, capes or hoods, but the kids need to be able to see to walk down the street safely.
Make sure that your child’s costume fits them properly. Loose costumes can get caught on gates and if the costume is too long it can lead to tripping. We want a safe and injury-free trick or treating experience! Shoes that fit well are also a plus for a safe Halloween.
One thing you can add to a costume is some reflective tape strips. Most stores carry these types of tape, including Walmart, and the Duck tape brand even makes some reflective tape. You can cut off the strips yourself, or you can pay a little more for pre-cut strips. Adding these strips makes it easy for cars to see the kids out trick or treating. If you are out walking with them, you may want to use some of this tape on your jacket, too.
Everyone out walking on Halloween should be carrying their own flashlight. If you have really small kids, you can hold a big flashlight and maybe have them wear glow stick necklaces or bracelets for some extra light and visibility.
You may have to remind the kids to not eat any candy or treats until you go home. You will want to check all of their candy to make sure they are safe to eat. Also let the kids know beforehand that they can only have a little bit of candy on Halloween night and can have more later. The kids will be excited from trick or treating and don’t need more sugar before bedtime.
Hope these tips help you and that you and your family have a fun and safe Halloween.
