On Monday I was given the chance to go see an advanced screening of The Help which is in theatres today. Unlike many others I had no clue what I was walking into with this movie. I had not read the book which was a #1 New York Times bestseller. All I knew was what I had seen from the previews.
When I was in elementary school I was in the same class as one of the daughters of Minnijean Brown who was part of the Little Rock Nine. I am no stranger to how African-Americans were treated in history. Minnijean shared her story with our school many times throughout my years there and of course we also had Black History Month every February. However to watch another movie tell a story about how we were once separated by race caught me off guard.
It was very well done and I love that it is taken from the perspective of Skeeter wanting to tell the story of The Help. I laughed, I cried and I cheered for the main characters. Minny was my favorite hands down. If I could go through the screen and give her a high-five and a hug I would.
Tobei was my date to the movie (of course) and even he really enjoyed the movie. He was worried it would be your typical “chick flick” but it wasn’t.
I give this movie 2 thumbs up and that is only because I don’t have more than 2 thumbs. I highly recommend seeing this movie. Even if you have read the book go see the movie. From what I am hearing from those who have read the book the movie was a perfect adaptation of the book. Now I just need to go get myself a copy of the book so I can read it as well.
Disclosure: I was provided with 2 tickets to attend an advanced screening of The Help. As always all opinions are my own.
