It’s finally spring! But that means it’s also time for spring cleaning! One of the best ways to clean your home this season is to purge! Purging your home helps you keep it clean and no longer cluttered. Go through everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. This process will help you keep your home clean year round and will make next year’s spring cleaning much easier. There are three simple steps to purging your home; plan, prepare and purge!
Make a plan
You will want to develop a plan of action for this task as it’s not going to be a small one. Write down each room or area of your home where you will need to go through items, then make a timeline. Make sure that you write this all down, it will help with making sure you get every area of the home clean. Examples of things would be; kitchen cabinets, bedroom closet, desk drawers, etc. Break each room into areas that need to be cleaned and gone through and write it all down on your list so that you can check them off as you go.
Don’t plan on getting this all done in one day unless you have a very small home with minimal items to go through. This will take about a week if you spread it out evenly each day. Spreading out the work will also allow you to keep your sanity while cleaning your entire home. This is where your timeline comes in, write down the days of the week and what you want to clean and purge each day.
Get prepared
When purging you will want to have a few items ready to go before starting. One will be a garbage bag, some things you just can’t donate. Another will be a donate bin, you will put everything that you no longer need and can donate into this bin while going through your home.
Some people prefer to use garbage bags, and will need many depending on how many things you are planning on getting rid of. (Remember, the point of this project IS to get rid of things!) You may also want another bin to bring with you each place to put items that need to go elsewhere in the house in. This will help keep the clutter down while you’re purging items everywhere else.

Purge!
Go through everything! Start at the top of your list and work your way down. Toss anything that you can’t donate, fill that donate bin with things you just don’t use anymore, and get cleaning! After you purge and area you will want to scrub it down, clean it good and then put everything back that you are keeping. This ensures that you’re not only going through everything but that you’re also cleaning it all as you go. Less work later on.
Helpful hint, when going through children’s room, do it when they are not there. Your children will try to give you a reason to keep everything, clothes that don’t fit them, toys they haven’t played with in two years, etc. It’s best to get rid of things from their space when they are gone to make it easier on yourself and avoid the arguments. (The shirt doesn’t fit them, no matter how much they want it, they either don’t need it or it can be given to a younger sibling, but they will fight that all day long.)
