Back to school means getting back to homework and routines. What to pack for school lunches is always a dilemma. You want healthy, but fun lunches that your kids will actually want to eat. Here are some lunch ideas that are fun and frugal, tasty and good for your kids.
Sandwiches are always a go to lunch for me. You can mix it up a bit by getting creative and ditching the bread. Mini-bagels, crackers, tortillas and pita pockets are all good alternatives to try for some variety. Whole grains are the healthiest, but if your child doesn’t like it, there is not use packing it. Let your kids experiment before school starts and try to find some bread alternatives that you and your kids can agree on. Cutting out sandwiches with cookie cutters can also be a fun way to surprise the kids at lunchtime.
You always want some protein, and many kids like PB & J. If your school bans peanut butter due to nut allergies, then you can try an alternative, such as Sunflower Seed butter. This may not be that cost effective, so consider other proteins. Hard boiled eggs or egg salad are good choices- just pack in a container separate from your bread so it doesn’t get soggy. If your kids happen to like hummus, you can easily make your own at home with flavors they like.
Fruits and veggies are important, but let your child pick their favorite. With your help, let them wash and prepare these the weekend before. They can even put their name on the baggie. Involving your child will give them some control and pride in helping. This will help to make sure that they will actually eat their lunch!
Sometimes kids will just want to trade lunch items with their friends. You can always ask them about what kinds of things their friends are packing. Maybe they will tell you something they really like. You can always pack a little extra of something so that your child is able to just share with a friend.
Make lunchtime more fun with cute lunch boxes or bags. You can also get little stickers (like funny eyes or faces) and put them on a brown bag. You can also put the stickers on plastic containers or baggies that you use. Put a note in the lunch with a trivia question or funny joke.Your child will have a memorable lunchtime when you bring a smile to their face.
