Next week I will be a busy person. To make some memories this summer I am going to have a week long blog series on Family Fun in the Ottawa area. One of the events my family will be covering is the Casino Lac-Leamy Sound of Light show. I last attended this show back in 2004 and am excited to bring Tobei and the kids to see it. Even more exciting is that they have agreed to let one lucky blog reader attend the August 9th performance by Portugal. Trust me these shows are a must see and a great evening of family entertainment.
About Sound of Light
Over the years, the Sound of Light has built a reputation in the pyrotechnical industry as being one of the best fireworks event in the world. The best companies from all over the globe are proud to be selected to come a produce one of their shows in order to be able to claim one of the highest awards in their field, the Casino du Lac-Leamy Sound of Light’s Zeus trophy.
This pyrotechnical extravaganza is made of shows from four international firms, who light up the sky over the Ottawa River in the hopes of being recognized as the best. The fireworks artists who create the Sound of Light shows are renowned pyrotechnical designers who have chosen an explosive medium, which includes many different shapes and sound effects, to color the night sky. It is on the last and fifth evening of the event, the Casino du Lac-Leamy’s Grande Finale, that the names of the teams, or sometimes a single team, that have been deemed the best by the jury and by the popular vote are finally revealed.
Since 2012, the production of all these colorful performances has been made possible thanks to the incredible work done Yannick Roy and Royal Pyrotechnics.
Based out of Saint-Pie, Quebec, this family run business has been operating in the world of pyrotechnics for almost half a century. Their passionate and dedicated team has the experience and skills needed to meet the expectations of the Sound of Light spectators. Their sole mission is to design, prepare and produce fascinating shows that fill the audience with emotion.
The Event
The event beats to the rhythm of cultures, not only with the fireworks presented by the different international teams but also via its multicultural dance performances, up and coming local singing talent and street performers. Family games and activities, as well as great food trucks, are also on-hand for the pleasure of kids of all ages.
Since 1996, the Casino du Lac-Leamy Sound of Light has…
- Welcomed more than 20 countries
- Welcomed close to 2 million spectators
- Invested more than 30 million $ in production costs
- Been a success thanks to the more than 200 000 hours invested by hundreds of volunteers who devote their time to the event each year

Grupo Luso Pirotecnia (GLP) was created in 1995 by the union of four Portuguese fireworks companies that united their forces to organize the biggest event ever realized in Portugal: The International Fair – Expo 1998 – Lisbon. Granted by the success of their collaboration for this event, the GLP still continues strong today and is now composed by 8 companies.
For their performance at the event, the team will invite spectators to tune in “Radio Artifice”, an 80’s radio program presenting all the greatest musical successes of the era, from Bon Jovi to A-Ha. By reliving the days of neon, glam metal and electro-pop, the team aims to make the viewers dance, laugh and dream. On August 9th, will you be on the right frequency?
