So I got some ranting to do brought on by my friend Cheryl at The Beautiful Side of Hectic.
There I was minding my own business as well as one can while surfing Facebook when I came across this status update.
For those who don’t know Cheryl’s daughter Jillian has Cerebral Palsy and uses a wheelchair. So yes she is fully entitled to that spot. However here is my issue and it has to do with the old man she speaks of.
If someone is in an accessible parking spot as long as they have the parking permit displayed whose business is it as to why exactly are they parked in that spot.
I once went out with someone who had an accessible parking permit and we even had police officers harassing us because he didn’t “look handicap” until he pulled up his pant leg and shoved his leg in their face to prove he was qualified to have the permit and park in the spot.
If this old man in Cheryl’s post had not seen the permit then maybe he should actually look next time before opening his mouth. As should a lot of people in society. Why open your mouth when you don’t know the whole story or when the situation doesn’t even affect you.
Why should Cheryl have to rush to get a wheelchair out of her car to prove to onlookers she is entitled to that spot? Why should those without a visible disability have to defend themselves to others over a parking spot. They have the permit and that is all they need. They do not need to explain themselves to any nosy person out there ignorant to the fact that not all disabilities are visible?
*End Rant*
